Comet ISON - Signs in the Heavens

Scripture: Luke 21 v 25

Jesus said: "And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring."

Verse 27 says Then shall we see the Son of Man coming in power and great glory!

Many people are watching Comet Ison with great fascination. This brave comet has dived into our Sun and come out smiling today. For days its progress has been tracked by astronomers to see if our Sun would swallow it up, but it has survived and continues on its orbit.

The other day there was a rare eclipse of the Sun by our Moon which was visible to at least two thirds of Earth's population. At the same time Super Typhoon Haiyan was devastating the Phillipines.

Not long before we saw Super storm Sandy strike the Eastern USA with huge tidal surges bringing distress and much destruction. Jesus said it would happen and people would be perplexed and worried.

We are starting to take weather warnings seriously as storms get stronger. I believe that one of the lesser known facts about the Moon is partially to blame for the ferocity of nature these days.

I saw a documentary a while ago which said that during the Creation the Moon hit the Earth a glancing blow like a billiard ball doing a ricochet in the place where the ultra deep Pacific Ocean is now. It caused the Earth to tilt and spin before it headed away.

They were trapped by each others gravitational pull but very slowly the Moon is putting distance between itself and Earth. It is possibly just far enough away to cause some drama down here. The Moon has always played a part in our tides so its just piling on the pressure. God controls it all! He sent the strong East wind to open the Red Sea for the fleeing Israelites escaping from Pharoah.

Another strong wind opened the Jordan River for the Ark of the Covenant and the 12 tribes to cross into Israel.

Jonah fled from God Who caused a strong wind and tempest to rock the ship he was aboard. He was thrown overboard and conveniently swallowed by a whale sent by God to save him and spit him out on the beach he ran away from.

Jesus calmed the storm and the waves that were causing distress to His disciples. And He will continue to watch over His people. Climate change is really the sign of His soon return. We don't know the date but we recognise the season of our salvation.

He tells us 365 times in the Bible to "Fear Not" - one for every day of the year - so if your life is secure in Jesus Christ, you will stay in perfect peace no matter what the weather is doing.

Prayer: Heavenly Father Your amazing plan is in full swing and Your Word is being fulfilled. You are watching and hoping that people will call upon the name of Jesus in the midst of all these violent storms. Your signs are visible in the Heavens and we are receiving You on full strength. I pray that many will heed Your warning and come into the safety of Your Kingdom. In Jesus' name. Amen.
