The Seven Deadly Sins
Scripture: Proverbs 6 v 16 - 19:
"These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto Him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren."
If these are things that the Lord hates, which He calls abominations, then we need to keep a check on our lives and behaviour so we eliminate them. We need to destroy any hold or control these sins have over us.
A proud look: When pride is in your heart it shows up in your facial expressions and mannerisms. Haughty, arrogant, snobbish, full of himself are the outward manifestations of pride. The inner soul will be hard, implacable, unteachable, deceived, manipulative and condescending. The air of superiority demeans those less accomplished.
A lying tongue: When you lie, you have to keep inventing untruths to keep your original lie believable. Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive! If Jesus, who is truth lives within your heart then lies must be far from you. If you are guilty then repent before your lying nature destroys your life.
Hands that shed innocent blood: Murder, rape, assault, terrorism, war, torture, shooting sprees, weapons of mass destruction, martial arts, intent to do grievous bodily harm make up this abomination. Deliberately causing death or injury through suicide, crashing aeroplanes, cars, motorbikes fall into this abominable category. Any support or funding to such people is equal guilt before God.
A heart that devises wicked imaginations: When you have been hurt and plot revenge, without forgiving and allowing Jesus to deal with the problem is one aspect of this. Also sexual evils like trafficking people into sexual slavery; pornography; some video games - do you know that Sendai in Japan where that devastating earthquake and tsunami destroyed that city, was the world's main centre for devising video games? This also includes the worst horrors of Hollywood film industry. The judgment is the Lord's!
Feet that be swift in running to evil: the immediate thoughts are drug runners and gangs. Not just the runners but the producers of opium and growers of poppies; or cocaine, or dagga or any mind altering drug that destroys the personality of the addicts. It also applies to prostitution, sex slavery, kidnapping, and financial misbehaviour. Those who benefit from these evils or who partake at any level are in danger of receiving punishment from God for doing things He hates.
A lying witness: anyone who gives a false testimony that causes a good person to be seen in a bad light; false accusations or slander, gossip and belittling people, can expect no mercy from the Father who must discipline His children to bring about the nature of His Son within them. Or lose them forever. Into this category are cults; false prophets; false doctrines in the church; freemasonry; Roman catholicism; false religions.
Those who sow discord among brethren: This can refer to families or churches or groups of Christians. The enemy finds a person who is full of the spirit of division to cause those whom the Lord is gathering to oppose each other. This person will protect their stance with vigour while causing discord through whispers, rumours, lies, misunderstandings or blatant rejection. They will reap what they sow, so they should quickly pray for crop failure.
Our God is full of compassion for those who decide to change their minds about wrong behaviour. He will abundantly pardon and forgive if they bring forth the fruit of repentance. The Holy Spirit convicts of sin, righteousness and judgment. Do not dismiss Him or procrastinate. Tomorrow may be too late.
Prayer: Father God, we sometimes fail to know those things You hate, and forget to work them out of our lives. Let us not neglect them today, let us audit our spiritual lives so that we may please You in all things. Let us get rid of lies, greed, gluttony, murder, sloth, gossip and lust. Change us, Father, to conform to the image of Jesus Christ, who is perfect. In Jesus' name. Amen.
