The Accursed Thing

Scripture: Joshua 7 v 3b: "For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you."


Joshua is busy conquering the tribes that dwelt in the Promised Land. After the death of Moses the mantle of responsibility for Israel's progress into the Land was laid on his shoulders.  Along the way one of their number, Achan, had disobeyed the Lord by taking an idol of the spoils of an enemy tribe and hiding it in his belongings.

Israel's next battle is against Ai, a small tribe, and Joshua decides to send only 2000 - 3000 men to deal with them. To his shock and dismay Israel is decisively beaten and he falls to the ground weeping before the Ark of God trying to discover why the power of God had deserted them on the battlefield. 

The Lord has no pity for him and says that Israel have sinned and taken a cursed thing into their midst and because of this they had no power against their enemies.  

The lesson we need to learn is that we may ignorantly or knowingly, have "an accursed thing" in our homes and it could be thwarting every plan we make.

Deuteronomy 7 v 25 - 26: "The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God.
26  Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing."

What the Lord is saying right through the Bible is that certain objects, books, some music, all idols, religious artefacts, have been cursed by the dark side, the Satanic realm, to keep people in bondage to things that are a curse to them.

The Lord says that disobedience ties His hands therefore He has made it very clear in His Word about dealings with Israel, and with us, that if we obey Him He withholds nothing from us but if we disobey, a curse blocks us from receiving His blessings. Deuteronomy 28.

Have you got something in your possessions that the Lord frowns on? If you are unable to overcome a problem in your life ask the Lord to show you if you have hidden an 'accursed thing' in your home or if you have been disobedient or sinned in some way. 

Strange idols include African carvings - especially masks, drums or heads; all porn; abuse of illegal or prescription drugs; statues of Buddha, Hindu, Jesus, Mary, or others. Books on the Occult, Mormon Bible, DvD's of witchcraft and occult related (Horror) content.  Music - Heavy Metal or Death Metal; Trance, most Rap songs have very dark lyrics, and music with serious deep base tones. Some kinds of jewellery like pentagrams or ankhs.  All of these would be seen as having an accursed thing in your possession.  

In Ezekiel 28 Lucifer, before he became Satan, was known as the one whose entire being was created in a musical dimension. He was the Archangel in charge of praise and worship in Heaven.  Music is one of his most constant influences on the human race. When Lucifer fell the whole spectrum of music fell with him. All music even good music. He wants us in trance so he can control our minds and emotions in areas of drugs, sex, witchcraft, death, suicide, rape and violence. Think on these things.

A visiting American pastor, strong on deliverance from demons, told us he was praying for a woman in his home, and getting no response.  She was trying to get free of becoming a witch.  He noticed her eyes fixed on something above his curtain rail, and saw it was a souvenir from an Eastern country.  She told him she was drawing power from it that was blocking his prayers.

He asked her to walk through his home and point out any other objects that would give power to a witch.  She found 14 objects in his home and he immediately destroyed them and was then able to set her free, while she had taught him a valuable lesson.

Hosea 4 v 6: "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children."

We suffer because we don't know enough, and when there is an opportunity to learn more we put our hand up and say "too much information" and refuse to listen.  Let us change these parameters and truly listen to all God is telling us in His Word.

If certain objects in our midst can cause us harm and we are ignorant of it, we need to reassess what is right and wrong around us.  I visited a dear cousin after a long absence and found she was suffering a heart ailment.  I saw three things in her home that were precious to her but lethal.  I told her about them and that she should get rid of them.  She listened and persuaded her husband, who was sceptical, but he complied and she got well.

Family members asked where the objects had gone and were told the whole story.  They were totally shocked that he went along with such nonsense.  He responded, the truth is, she got better after years of suffering!

How many people perish or have chronic ailments, needlessly, because an accursed thing has found its way into their homes, as gifts, souvenirs, or inherited family heirloom?  

Another family we were led to, as we entered their unfamiliar home, my eldest son screamed and ran out the back door bleeding from his mouth, nose and ears.  He had never done that before.  When I had calmed him, he was 10 years old, he said there was an object in a glass cabinet that had shot a laser beam into his head!  It was a purple Egyptian idol.  There were several other things in this cabinet that were very cursed.

I explained it to this elderly couple, she had cancer, and they agreed to destroy them and we helped them do it.  When this Egyptian idol was destroyed with a hammer, that same boy felt the demon go right through him, and he collapsed unconscious for about twenty minutes.  

A week after we left there, the elderly man collapsed and a doctor was called.  He said the man was fortunate that his heart muscles had only had a tremor.  There was also a purple ring around his mouth.  We were thankful to have brought these two spiritualists to Jesus, for there is little doubt that he would have died of a heart attack that day.  

If your family or finances or health is under stress get rid of the accursed thing that is blocking the Lord's blessing from your life. Identify the object that is attracting things that shatter the peace and abundance you should be enjoying. The way God protects us is through obedience to His Word. He warns of consequences if we don't apply this knowledge to every situation.


Prayer: Heavenly Father, forgive me for hiding the accursed thing in my goods. Show me the minefield around me that needs defusing. Help me to cleanse my home, family, car, office and life of every evil object and wash me in the Blood of Jesus. Lord help me to obey Your Word. In Jesus' name. Amen.
